Permafrost Information

Here's a clue about where to find information on Permafrost.   Use this link to see Bernhard Edmaier's wonderful photographs of permafrost from around the world.  Think about how much of our Earth is covered with permafrost and ice.  Why is it important to study this area?

This site is great. I love the links. I just wish they were at a slightly lower reading level for my students. Some of my students would certainly benefit though. Thanks for sharing.

I think it is imporatant to study the permafrost because now that Global warming is really affecting out lands and how alot of the ice is melting. It seemd really cool that you are able to go up there and maybe You will be able to see a polar bear.

You are correct Carolyn. We will be studying climate change this year, and how climate has changed throughout Earth's existence.

I think that the permafrost is important because much of what lay frozen for years is now either slowly of rapidly unfreezing and causing huge changes in climate which is affecting the wildlife. i think that if we reduce uses of greenhouse gasses and pollute less, we may still have a shot at preserving our permafrost. i would like to know what the climate is like on your trip and if it is cold because i saw snow and permafrost in the Rockies and it was really warm out.

Roger, I will definitely keep track of the daily weather while I am there. Hopefully it won't be too cold, I am anticipating that the temperature will be no lower than 40 F during the day.

i think it is important to study permafrost becuase globe warming is melting it so it may be gone before we kbnow it. permafrost is rock or stone that can live all year around in lower than 0 degrees. yes it is in the united states becuase it can be found in Alaska. i really want to study this. good luck on your trip.

Good information Casey. You answered the questions well. When you said 0 degrees, did you mean Celsius or Fahrenheit?

I think that permafrost is probably going to melt if the Earth keeps changing with Global Warming because if the soil up north reach more than 32 degreesF or 0 degreesC it will melt and the things that are in it like fossils will be melted away. But, have fun on the trip.

Rony - What is your estimate on how long this will take for the permafrost around Churchill? Is it possible to slow down climate change?

I think studying Permafrost is very important because if we learn more about Permafrost than we can then know how to save it from melting too quickly. Using cars and other things that send greenhouse gases into the atmosphere makes it inevitable that it will melt. By the Permafrost melting it sends greenhouse gases into the air which causes it to melt faster causing a rapid spiral melting effect. If we study the Permafrost we would learn what is inside it. Maybe fossils of dinosaurs could be in it. Have fun on the trip 5:)

Mac is right Inside Permafrost there is Mammoth dung, and fossils and other organic material that can release carbon dioxide. I think that it might be that serious.

When you go to Churchill, you could bring a cooler and preserve permafrost and show us? I think the warm permafrost will be the one to survive out of all the permafrost types.

Hi;Ms.McMinn. I think permafrost means, that when the soil is at or below the freezing point of water(0°C or even 32°F)for two or more years. Yes, you can find it in the United States, and you can find it in very cold areas like Alaska or Northern America.- ashyla
