Beluga Whales
It looks like I will be arriving in Churchill during a transition phase. The Beluga whales are leaving the area and the polar bears have yet to fully arrive. What do you know about beluga whales? Have you been to Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut to see the whale? Tell us some interesting facts about belugas.

I know that beluga whales are sometimes called sea canaries because they make high pitched noises. They are also up to 15ft. long. I also know that the English name beluga is derived from a German name that means white.

I did a project before about belgua Whales. Belgua whales usally live to about 30-40 years. Also, i went to the mystic aquarium last year and the people that work there said one of the belgua whale weight about 1,000 pounds.

Beluga Whales are mostly found in shallow costal waters. They swim in temperatures as low as 32-F. Most Beluga Whales make seasonal migrations or may migrate to shallower or deeper waters. The world population of Beluga Whales are estimated to about 62,OOO to 8O,OOO in 1994.
I have been to Mystic Aquarium, and have seen beluga whales. I know that they are usually not agressive animals, and they make high-pitch calls to eachother. I also know that they live about 35 years, can survive in cold waters, and can weigh up to 1,000 pounds. They are born grey, and turn white when they mature as well.

I learned that beluga whales use high pithced sounds to communicate with each other. They also use these sound waves as a tool for navigation. The high pitched sound waves bounce off objects in the water and reflect back, giving the whale an image of what is ahead of them. Eleven different beluga whale vocals have been recored so far.

I saw a beluga whale in the Boston Aquarium. They were very active. I heared that Beluga whales stay together as a group and defend each other as a pack. Unfortunetely, I also heared that the whales are being hunted. They are hunted for skin, meat, and blubber. I hope the Beluga survive.

I reasareched beluga whales and found a great site called http://www.seaworld.org/animal-info/info-books/beluga/physical-characteristics.htm. It taught me about Beluga Whales Pectoral Flippers
PECTORAL FLIPPERS
A beluga whale's forelimbs are pectoral flippers. Pectoral flippers have skeletal elements of the forelimbs of land mammals, but they are shortened. The skeletal elements are supported by connective tissue. Cartilage pads lie between the bones of each digit. Connective tissue lies between the digits. Lastly, thier are great pictures on the seaworld website.
